阿里夫·德里克（Arif Dirlik, 1940-），生于土耳其，美国俄勒冈大学“耐特社会科学讲座教授”（Knight Professor of Social Science）。德里克长期致力于中国近代史尤其是中国革命史的研究，《革命与历史——中国马克思主义史学的起源》、《中国共产主义的起源》、《中国革命中的无政府主义》等著作奠定了其在西方学界的中国研究权威学者的地位。进入20世纪90年代以来，德里克更将其理论撰著的领域扩展至后殖民批评与文化研究，《革命之后：警惕全球资本主义》、《后殖民氛围》等著作令其跻身当代美国社会科学界重量级学者的行列。

石约翰（John E. Schrecker），师从汉学大师费正清，布兰代斯（Brandeis）大学历史系教授，同时在美国哈佛大学费正清东亚研究中心从事研究工作。除本书外，尚著有Imperialism and Chinese Nationalism: Germany in Shantung、Reform in nineteenth-century China（与Paul A. Cohen合编）等。

卜寿姗（Susan Bush），美国著名艺术史家，现为哈佛大学费正清研究中心研究员。自上世纪60年代开始就一直致力于中国文人画研究。她的主要著作还有与孟克文（Christian Murck）合著的《中国艺术理论》。

季羡林（1911-2009），山东临清人。1934年毕业于清华大学外语系,翌年作为清华大学与德国的交换研究生赴德国哥廷根大学学习梵文、巴利文、吐火罗文,获哲学博士学位。1946年回国在北京大学东方语言系任教授，曾任北大副校长、南亚研究所所长、中国史学会常务理事等职。对印度古代语言、印度古典文学、印度佛教史以及中印文化关系等方面有精深研究，著作颇丰,有《中印文化关系史论丛》、《罗摩衍那安探》、《今译》（合著），译有《沙恭达罗》、《五卷书》、《罗摩衍那》等。
